Sri Lanka is rolling out new high tech security number plates for vehicles to help Police in the detection of vehicular movements, prevent counterfeiting, duplication and crimes, a senior Transport Ministry official said.

These new number plates will be introduced to ensure the security of vehicles, assist police to keep tabs on vehicles, detect theft and digitise data, he said adding that the government has given priority for digitalization all sectors of the economy.

It will also help the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) to digitise records and keep track of any vehicle on the road.

A micro chip embedded in the number plate will make it easier for the authorities to get details of vehicles on the road. The chip will store the data of the car owner including registration details, chassis number and other relevant details.

It will be difficult to remove/replace the hitech number plates and will also prevent robberies and car-jacking.

The MTD will introduce these high tech number plates shortly and the process is still in the experimental stage, the official said.

A radio frequency identification system is to be introduced to new number plates which will help police to detect vehicular movements, he disclosed.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information.
