The Ministry of Education (MoE) is concerned over students’ reluctance to choose Geometry questions at the GCE Ordinary Level examinations.
The Mathematics branch of the MoE is organising a dialogue to improve the teaching of Geometry and make it more interesting to students.
“Assessment reports by the Exams Dept show that students avoid Geometry related questions, while those who do select it, often get the answers wrong,” the MoE said.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has instructed officials to conduct a scientific study and make necessary changes to attract more students to answer Geometry questions, by making it easier to understand. The Mathematics branch intends to obtain suggestions and views, analysing previous and present syllabuses and introducing modern methods of teaching Geometry.

The suggestions will be forwarded to the expert committee on Mathematics education at the MoE, who will determine suitable changes.
