Kamil, Pasindu, Gayan steer Royal to victory

Half tons by Kamil Mishara and skipper Pasindu Sooriyabandara and a five wicket haul by Gayan Shanaka paved the way for Royal to record a comfortable 131 run win over Wesley in their 125th encounter between the two schools concluded at Campbell Park yesterday.
The win saw Royal retain the Sir Frank Gunasekera Shield and in the process winning it for the 12th time since the Shield was on offer in 1969.
Royal batting for the second time; continued from their overnight score of 40 for 2 and went on to make a score of 231 for 6 declared. Wesley set a target of 278 runs for victory folded up for a low score of 146 with Gayan Shanaka and Themal Bandara did the damage as they shared eight of the ten Wesley second innings wickets.
The encounter which is the 125th between the two schools is the second oldest inter-school cricket encounter following the Royal – Thomian encounter.
The Sir Frank Gunasekera Shield was introduced in 1969 with Wesley winning it under the leadership of Amaresh Rajaratnam. Royal are the current holders of the Shield having won it under the captaincy of Harith Samarasinghe, before they did so last evening.
St. Benedict’s and St. Joseph’s figured in a tame draw in their match which ended at Kotahena while Sri Devananda MV Ambalangoda recorded a massive 246 runs win over Taxila Horana at Horana.
