Udayakantha Waransuirya’s newest movie ‘Madhura Charika’-Joyful Journeys, which has already won international acclaim would be released in local cinema in March.

With renowned actor Hemasiri Liyanage playing the protagonist as a cinema star of yesteryear, the film revolves around Wilson Godamanne, an 85-year old former film actor, who lives with his son, daughter in law and two grandchildren in the picturesque hill country.

The film captures the lives of ordinary folk. Nostalgically reaching out for his former glory, Wilson decides to attend a film festival showing one of his films. Accompanied by his 8-year-old grandson, Wilson arrives in time to see himself. On his way to catch his bus, he is stricken fatally by a heart attack. With only a helpless child at hand, Wilson experiences the compassion of strangers and friends. The film leaves behind a lasting impression of the need of humans to find value in themselves especially as the light of life begins to fade.

Along with Liyanage, ‘Joyful Journeys’ stars Nalin Pradeep Uduwela, Madani Malwatta, Kumara Thirimadura, Sudam Katukitule, Sarath Chandrasiri, Dharmapriya Dias, Ramani Alakolanga, Ajith Lokuge and Chathura Perera.

Camera is handled by Ayeshmantha Hettiarachchi, edited by Praveen Jayaratne, music directed by Navaratne Gamage, make up by Nalin Prematillake and the art director is Aruna Dias. Production executive is Asoka Ariyaratne and assistant director is Donald Jayantha. The film is assisted in production by Dayawansa Jayakody and Kumara Wandurresse.

‘Joyful Journeys’ became one of the Grand Jury Prize winners in the Van Gogh Awards at the 2016 Amsterdam Film Festival.
