CEMS –Global USA, a large exhibition organiser especially in the garment and textile machinery, plans to organise an exhibition in Sri Lanka of motorcycles and e-bikes in August this year.

In the meantime, CEMS is holding three international exhibitions for the textile and garment sector of Sri Lanka from March 8 to 10 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) in Colombo.

S.S. Sarwar, Group CEO, Conference and Exhibition Management Services Ltd (CEMS) Global, New York making comments to the Business Times (BT) on the sidelines of the launch of the above exhibitions in Colombo this week spoke of the confidence of the international business community on the lasting peace now enjoyed in Sri Lanka and also indicated that they are planning to have a ‘Bike Show’ on motorcycles and e-bikes in August this year.

CEMS has been organising trade shows ever since the war ended in 2009 and has launched very important international trade exhibitions for the trade and industry in Sri Lanka.

The ‘Bike Show’ is expected to be a popular one, especially on electric bikes (e-bikes). Once the concept and the usefulness is understood by the people consequent to the envisaged ‘Bike Show’ it would become a mode of transport like the motorcycle. The e-bike is also identified as powerbike or booster bike and is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor to power instead of peddling or which assists the rider’s peddling.

According to the capacity of the motor and the laws pertaining to e-bikes in different countries the speed could vary going up to 45 km/h or about 28 miles per hour. It could go as an automated bicycle rather than a motorcycle.

On the economy, stability and peace, Mr. Sarwar said that exports in Sri Lanka has gone up to US$ 5.4 billion from $4 billion around three years ago.

Speaking of the event, he said that this is the 9th edition with the first show being held in 2010. It is a big event now with more than 170 international companies from six different countries.

With GSP + now in place, things are moving in a positive direction and the international manufacturers want to do business with Sri Lankan apparel manufacturers and textile manufacturers.

He said that CEMS Global USA and CEMS Lanka have put in great efforts and held meetings and trade shows for the textile and apparel industry, logistics and shipping and power and energy and also partnered with business associations to create important business and business platforms in the form of trade shows for the benefit of Sri Lanka.
