Information Technology (IT) is to be made a compulsory subject in the near future, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
He said all schools will be provided with the necessary IT equipment and incorporating IT into the syllabus are some of the plans to be implemented.

The Minister said the halting of laptop distribution to teachers and students is temporary, and all measures will be taken to commence the project soon. He said this at a ceremony held at the Ministry premises last week, to grant appointments to 104 Grade III Officers of the Education Administrative Service.

The Minister said the laptop awarding project was withdrawn following political criticism from various parties. He said the present students should be equipped with the essential skills including IT, to face future challenges and the future job market. “If we don’t prepare children to face these challenges, they will definitely blame the Education authorities,” Mr. Kariyawasam said.

The Minister said there has been much criticism and attacks through social media, over the laptop project, but the project will commence without any political hindrance, he added.
