Rs 3m+ to 1,700+ students as Insurance payments

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has disbursed over Rs 3 million to more than 1,700 beneficiaries, while over 6,000 others have sought relief, under the student insurance scheme “Suraksha.”

The MoE said that, at present, about 1 million students in National, Provincial, Private and International schools and Pirivena’s have been covered under this insurance scheme.

“According to the Insurance Corporation, by March 5 this year, Rs 3 million has been distributed to students, while it has received 6,600 requests for insurance payments, from October 2017-February 2018,” the MoE said.

The MoE has currently distributed 1 million cards while another 2 million cards will be distributed in two weeks. However, the card is not required to obtain the benefits.

An initiative by the Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, “Suraksha.” will cover about 4.5 million schoolchildren in 11,242 schools islandwide.

Under this insurance scheme, students are eligible for Rs 10,000 annually, for treatment at the Outdoor Patients Dept and benefits up to Rs 100,000 for hospitalization. Rs 100,000 will be paid for the unexpected death of a child, and Rs 75,000 for the death of a parent. Rs 100,000 will be given if a child becomes completely disabled, and Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 100,000 if partially disabled.
