Petes have it easy against Zahira
Notwithstanding the threats of a heavy downpour St. Peter’s College enjoyed a memorable start to their Singer Schools Division I Rugby League Championship with a smashing 48-12 win against Zahira College at Havelock Park yesterday.
The Peterites were on the onslaught from the word ‘go’ and their ace player, centre Ravin Fernando braced four tries in a dominating game. They raced to take a commanding 34-0 nil at halftime.
The Peterites went on to add 14 more points in the second half while conceding 12 during that period, to complete with a tally of eight tries and four conversions. Zahira managed to breach the Peterite defence twice to end up with two tries and a conversion.
Within a minute from the first whistle the Peterites were on fire with an early touchdown as Fernando completed with a tally of four tries. Julian Charles, Shawantha, Shehan Liyanapathirana and Karunaratne scored a try each for the winners. Shenol Perera and Liyanapathirana kicked two conversions each.
St. Peter’s also dominated the junior games. Their Under-16 and Under-14 recorded identical wins, with scores reading 30-0 in both games.
