The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has again issued notice to the Central Cultural Fund’s (CCF) Sigiriya Project Director to present himself at the Commission for a hearing into thealleged theft of valuable artefacts from Sigiriya.

The HRCSL is holding an inquiry into a complaint filed by activist Deemon Ananda alleging that a team engaged in an archaeological excavation at Sigiriya had removed, among other items, a priceless golden bed. He alleges that the entire incident was subsequently covered up.

The Commission had on an earlier occassion too, issued summons to the Director General of Archaeology and the CCF’s Sigiriya Project Director to appear before it regarding the complaint.

Despite the Commission having issued summons on the Sigiriya Project Director on four previous occasions he failed to heed the summons. On the last occasion Tuesday (13), though the complainant appeared before the Commission, the respondent did not. Accordingly, the HRCSL directed that summons again be served on the Sigiriya Project Director through the CCF office in Colombo and the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, which is the CCF’s subject Ministry. Summons was also issued on the Director General of Archaeology.
