Sri Lanka girls emerge JFC champs
The Sri Lanka girls comprising of Savini Jayasuriya, Anjalika Kurera emerged winners of the Junior Federation Cup (JFC) international tennis tournament when they defeated Singapore 2-0 in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Sri Lanka yesterday.
The tie was concluded after the Sri Lanka girls won the first two singles matches with Savini Jayasuriya coasting to an easy 2-0 win against Trisha Mulani with identical scores of 6/2 and in the game saw Anjalika Kurera undergoing some anxious moments before pulling off the match 2-1 against Joelle Yi Min Goh with scores of 7/5, 4/6, 6/2.
In the battle for the third place between Mongolia and Philippines saw the former prevailing with a close two sets one victory.
In the boys Junior Davis Cup (JDC) which was played concurrently saw the Sri Lankans being able to secure only the fourth place as they beaten 2-1 by Vietnam in the third place play off. Kavisha Ratnayake won the first singles but Chaturya Nilaweera lost his match and later the Sri Lankan pair of Kavisha Ratnayake and Ashen Silva lost the doubles encounter which ensured the tie to Vietnam.
Meanwhile Pakistan the number four seeded team pulled off a major upset when they defeated the top seeded and favourites for the JDC title Pacific Oceania in an enthralling three set tie by two sets to one with the two teams sharing the singles before Pakistan coasted to an easy win in the doubles encounter.
The champion Pakistan team comprised Huzaifa Abdul Rehman, Muhammad Shoaib and Muhammad Ahmed Kamil.
