A new subject I like
Now I am in Grade Six and I have to do 14 new subjects. At first I was a little scared but now I feel all those subjects are very interesting. But from all of the subjects, my favourite subject is Science.

In Science we study Chemistry, Physics and Biology. When I say these words I feel like I am a very important person. In Chemistry we learn about the states of matter. In Biology we learn about organ systems and plant and animal cells. Physics is fantastic! It’s about forces.
Our Science teacher explains these lessons very well and we don’t feel the time is passing. We have to do a lot of scientific experiments inside the laboratory and I got the chance to handle a microscope. It was like my dream come true. We saw plant cells and human body cells very clearly through the microscope.

I am eagerly learning Science as my aim is to be a scientist in the future.

Our annual sportsmeet
Our annual sportsmeet was held at
Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa grounds on February 7, 2018. I went there early and helped to decorate my house. Our house made a model of a cricket cap, bat and ball.
At about 12 noon we started the sportsmeet. First we listened to the welcome speech. Then the next event was running. We cheered the runners of our house and we got the first place. After running and giving medals, it was time for our drill display. After performing our drill we had a cool milo drink. After drinking that tasty drink we watched the march-past. After that all the children went behind the march-past to find out which position our houses had got.
Our house was first in drill display so we cheered and clapped. Finally my house Dammadhinna won the first place. Then at about 5 p.m., our sportsmeet came to an end and we went home happily. We enjoyed our sportsmeet thoroughly and it was an unforgettable event.

My happiest moment at school
I am a student in Grade Four at Zahira College, Colombo. My class teacher is Ms. Shazmin. She teaches and looks after us well. We have great respect for her and she too takes much time and looks into our studies. We all are lucky to have a great teacher like her.
However, the happiest moment in my life was when I was elected as a prefect in the Primary section. I am now in a position to serve my school, my classmates and friends with much affection and responsibility.

I hope to serve my motherland with pride and dignity after my happy days at school are over.

My favourite storybook
I have read thousands of books and out of them I have read a book with many adventures. It was ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ written by Jules Verne. It is also a novel which gives us a lesson in life.

In this story, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout get a challenge to travel around the world in eighty days, from the Reform Club. But in this time there were no jets and fast trains. The schedule of Phileas Fogg was from London to Suez, via Mount Cenis and Brindisi, by rail and boat seven days, from Suez to Bombay by boat, 13 days, from Bombay to Calcutta by rail 3 days, from Calcutta to Hong Kong by boat 13 days, from Hong Kong to Yokohama by boat 6 days, from Yokohama to San Francisco by boat 22 days, from San Francisco to New York by rail 7 days, from New York to London by boat and rail 9 days, all together 80 days.

Then Phineas Fogg and Passepartout complete the challenge. In this story you can get an idea about how to face a challenge.

A little learning is a dangerous thing
These words by Alexander Pope are full of meaning. As a general rule, learning must not be a dangerous thing. As Horace Mann says, “A human being is not in any proper sense a human being, till he is educated.” But a little learning becomes a dangerous thing when it is applied to real life.

For example, if a doctor has not got a proper degree through hard and dedicated work, he can do harm to society. He can kill more people than he can save. The bridges, buildings and dams built by an engineer with imperfect knowledge of his subject will collapse sooner. A teacher who is not a master of his subject will misguide his students.

In every field, we need specialists who can guide us better. But unfortunately, many unskilled people are cunning enough to masquerade as specialists. The credulous people are duped by them. We must try to distinguish between the real and fictitious specialists and try to beware of the latter species.

A man with real and deep knowledge is generally humble. He is not interested in indulging in cheap publicity.
He believes in constructive work. But a man of shallow knowledge shows himself off. He is always after one of another victim. He may wear artificial smiles but sooner or later he will be exposed. He can cause great harm to society!

The fastest race car
The fastest race car is Ninety-Five.
Do you know the first race in ‘Cars’? Lightning McQueen crashed because he did not change his tyres
but he didn’t get hurt in ‘Cars 3′ because Jackson Storm went fast and Lightning McQueen was trying to pass Jackson Storm. But Lightning McQueen’s tyres burst and Jackson Storm won the race.

Plants
There are lots of plants in my garden. They are tomato, brinjal, chillie, mango, apple and orange. Plants need sunlight, water and good soil. A plant has four parts. They are leaves, stem, root, fruits and flower. We can eat some plants, for example thulasi, gotukola. Some plants smell good. Some plants smell bad.
We should not cut plants.
In my school, there are lots of plants. Some are very beautiful, some are very ugly. Some plants have thorns, while others don’t. I grow more and more plants in my garden.

The rain
Rain you fall from the sky
And you fall to the earth
You scatter everywhere
By filling gaps all around.

You flow down the earth
By filling all streams
Filled streams then,
Fill all the lakes and rivers.

When rivers overflow
We say you cause floods
Floods trouble us, But
You give life to us.

Village life
When we think of getting away from cities and visiting a village we see its true beauty. Floating of a cloud is like the peace of a village. When flowers bloom beside the lake, the breeze fills the whole environment with sweet smells. The sound of a bee humming is like pouring honey to the ear of eternal peace. The chirping of sweet birds are the natural calls of nature.

When the sun rises, people start
their busy day; first start with a cool bath of fresh water drawn from the wells; the happy laughter of children running through fields of wild flowers. Something to remember is the tasty smell of food.

Village life is a way to get free from troubles. It relaxes our minds.
Is the city the best or is it the village? What is your idea? My choice is the blessed, graceful village.
