Second stage of expressway plastic recycling programme launched

A project to collect and recycle PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles carried by commuters on the Southern Expressway was launched at the expressway’s Welipenna pit stop on the 22nd March.

The project, a collaborator venture between the Expressway Operation, Maintenance & Management Division of the Road Development Authority and two private companies aims to handle the recycling of PET bottles. the company began their recycling work in 2009, converting around 30,000 kg waste plastic per month.

The monthly collection has now increased to 200,000 kg, showing a sharp increase in the use of plastic by Sri Lankans.It is estimated that that around 40 bins will be required to cover the key exists.

The second stage of the project envisages bins being installed along the Katunayake expressway as well.

Commuters on the expressway are requested to protect the environment by disposing PET bottles only in the plastic recycle bins.

The launch of the project was attended by officials of the Southern Expressway, its Deputy Director Mr. R.A.D. Kahatapitiya, Ms. Nisreen Rehmanjee, Vice President John Keells Group and Mr. Manoj Udawatte – Senior Factory Manager, Beira Enviro Solutions Ltd along and staff of the company.
