Mendis brothers complete job for Richmond
A five-wicket haul by Sandun Mendis and a well compiled 64 off 82 balls with 4 hits to the ropes by elder brother Kamindu saw Richmond College register a 6-wicket win over the strong Mahinda College outfit in their annual Limited Over encounter played at the Galle International Stadium, yesterday.
With this win Richmond retain the RCU Colombo Centenary Challenge Trophy and extend their lead in the series with 20 wins to Mahinda’s eight.
Mahinda invited to bat first got off to a good start with openers Navod Paranavithana (20) and Hansika Welihinda sharing an opening stand of 44 runs. Hansika went on to score 51 runs off 97 balls with five boundaries and a six while Kavindu Ediriweera batting at No.6, chipped in with 28 off 45 balls with one six. Sandun Mendis bowled well to capture five wickets while Avindu Theekshana claimed two wickets.
Richmond lost opener Adithya Sriwardena in the second over of their innings but skipper Dhananjaya Lakshan (43 off 43 balls), Kamindu Mendis (64), Thaveesha Abhishek (20) and Dilum Sudeera (unbeaten on 40) saw them win the game with six wickets in hand and 11 overs to spare. Subhanu Rajapaksha captured two wickets.
