UNFF leader bailed out on gun charge

The United National Freedom Front (UNFF) leader Maithri Gunaratne was arrested by the police in Kadugannawa, after they found two shot guns in his vehicle while he was leading a protest march against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Police said the guns did not have the necessary licence at the time of the detection though Mr Gunaratne said the weapons were licensed. Ten cartridges also were recoverd.

Police had also found 99 sticks of cinnamon from the same vehicle. Mr. Gunaratne was produced before Acting Magistrate Mahinda Liyanage who released him on bail.The case has been fixed for June 13. The Kadugannawa OIC Ranjith Balasuriya said further investigations would be carried out.
Mr Gunaratne who broke away from the UNP formed his own party and contested the recently concluded local council elections.
