The Ministry of Education (MoE) is exploring ways of minimising private GCE AL tuition classes during school-hours, after revelations that students were not attending school, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. He said that, despite improvement of facilities in schools and more teachers assigned, children opt to attend tuition classes during school-hours, and were missing out on practical classes.

“We are considering banning classes on weekdays from 7 am. to 1.30 pm. A Cabinet paper in this regard will be submitted,” he said.
“This trend can affect the quality of education and therefore, we need to correct the situation,” he said. Minister Kariyawasam said they have received complaints from teachers in this regard. However, students sitting the ALs in a private capacity have expressed concern about the move, as it would affect them attending classes during that period. -DW
