The Agriculture Department has stepped up an initiative to promote local food items among consumers by opening up more food outlets known as ‘Hela bojun hal’.

The latest of them was opened in Matale on Friday marking the third such outlet in the district, while several other outlets have been opened in other areas.

The programme’s objective is to promote local nutritious food items among consumers at affordable rates.

The outlets mostly use rice flour and local cereals, while local herbs and fruit drinks are also available.

The outlets opened so far have been drawing large crowds including bus loads of pilgrims and tourists.

The outlet in Matale was opened by Central Province Governor Niluk Ekanayake and the event was attended by newly elected Matale Mayor Daljith Aluviharae, Provincial council member A.H.M.Ibrahim, Central Province Agriculture Ministry Director B.H.N. Jayawickrema, Director Agriculture (Central Province) Prasanna Pallemulla and Additional GA Ishan Wijetillake.
