Speaker unveils statue of Madugalle Disawe
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya unveiled a Statue of Madugalle Udagabada Nilame, the Disawe of Wellassa, at the Matale Public Library premises amidst a distinguished gathering on Saturday. The Speaker said that there should be unity in the country, without which it would be like the times of Madugalle Disawe. A valiant swordsman, Madugalle Disawe and other freedom fighters commenced the struggle to free the country from foreign rule. The unveiling of the statue marks the 199th anniversary of Madugalle Disawe. The ceremony was organised by the National Foundation of Veera Madugalle Disawe which is headed by Bernard Madugalle – former Basnayake Nilame of Ambokka Devale, Matale. Vasantha Aluvihare MP, Basnayake Nilame of Ambokka Devale, J.B. Madugalle, Secretary of the Foundation, Robert Madugalle, Treasurer of the Foundation Col. Nanda Madugalle, National Organiser and other distinguished persons were present.
