The long-awaited PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan machine was installed at the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama on April 1. Hundreds joined in to walk from the Galle Road in Wellawatte to Maharagama to raise awareness of the fund raising efforts.

The funds to purchase the PET scan machine, amounting to Rs. 252 million, even though the plea was for Rs. 200 million were raised by a campaign launched by Kadijah Foundation’s President M.S.H. Mohamed with people and the media, including Wijeya Newspapers Ltd., and the Sunday Times joining in.

While Mr. Mohamed and his Fight Cancer team was campaigning for the installation of the PET scan machine, Mr. Mohamed’s son, Humaid, who was battling an osteosarcoma (a cancer that starts in the bones) succumbed to it.

Now that the PET scan machine is in place, Mr. Mohamed and his team are to provide other essential tools and equipment needed at the NCI.
