A school declared open by the late Mahatma Gandhi, at Katukelle, which became the Kandy Hindu Central College (KHCC), following the ‘school’s takeover’ by the government, was given a new building costing Rs 13 million, which is the first phase. This school, until the government takeover, was managed by Selvar Nyagar Sangam of Jaffna.

There are 3 more construction phases to complete the building. Part of the funds were from the Government and the Central Provincial Council (CPC).
CP Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Kandy Mayor Dahasonda Kesara Sennayake and MP Velu Kumar attended religious observances at the Sri Ghanadevi Kovil and also at the new building.

KHCC Principal Suva Kumar said that there are 320 students in the school, with a staff of 23, with additional children admitted when the next 3 floors are constructed. The Photographs show the religious ceremonies conducted at the new building and also at the Kovil. – L.B. Senaratne
