Megapolis Ministry cannot override decisions taken by Kandy Municipality: Mayor
The newly elected Mayor for Kandy Kesara Senanayake is to urge the Megapolis Ministry not to approve plans that have been turned down by the Municipality.
He said that he would have to have a discussion with Megapolis Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and explain to him that the Ministry cannot override and go ahead with construction plans that have not been passed by the Municipality.
He said that when one looks out from the landmark Queen’s Hotel building in town what one sees is concrete and more concrete and questioned who had given permission to build these in the first place.
The Mayor said trees had been cut at random and now new trees will have to be planted.
“Who authorised unauthorised structures ? These are questions that I will have to deal with during my tenure,” he said.
He said he would seek the cooperation of all members of the Council to restore the beauty of this heritage city.
