SL Navy’s second Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel set to sail

The second Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) of the Sri Lanka Navy, built at an Indian shipbuilding facility was commissioned by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday at the Eastern Container Terminal of the Colombo port.

Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) had built the ship.

After the guard of honour the Prime Minister handed over the commissioning warrant to the inaugural Commanding Officer of the ship, Captain Samantha Perera.

The Prime Minister unveiled the ship’s crest and name board to the blessings of religious dignitaries, to designate the new AOPV as Sri Lanka Navy Ship (SLNS) Sindurala.

This AOPV which is the second vessel of its kind to be acquired by the Sri Lanka Navy will be manned by 18 officers and 100 sailors. The length and the width of the latest platform are 105.7m and 13.6m respectively and it is equipped with a landing facility and hangar for an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).

Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera, Duminda Dissanayake, State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kapila Waidyaratne, Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director General Operations Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva and officers of Goa Shipyard were present on the occasion.
