Trilingual conference on craft in Jaffna Uni

Organized by Department of Fine Arts, Jaffna University, American Institute for Lankan Studies (AILS), Colombo, Lanka Decorative Arts (LDA) and the Sri Lanka Archive of Contemporary Art, Architecture & Design, Jaffna, the conveners are Dr. T. Sanathanan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Fine Arts, University of Jaffna and Dr. Ayesha Abdur-Rahman, Founding Director, Lanka Decorative Arts, Colombo.
Papers will be presented on The Meaning of Craft, Craft as a Category in Art History, Craft and Social Identity: Gender, Caste and Ethnicity, Invented Traditions, Nationalisms, Nation Building and Craft, Souvenir Culture, Tourism and the Craft Industry, Institutional Mediation and the Category of Craft, Economic Empowerment, Development and Craft, Craft in Education, Craft Villages, Guilds, Caste and Workshops.
All registered participants can join a one-day tour to important craft workshops, museums and sites that have significant collection of artifacts. This tour will take place as part of the conference programme on May 13.
