Medical Administrator turned Musical healer
Dr. Thusitha Sudarshana, experienced medical administrator who has excelled as a musician is to perform at his latest musical show ‘Isiwara Miyasiya’ with the participation of popular stars at Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama on May 5.
The concert is organised for a worthy cause and Dr. Sudarshana is determined to support welfare societies of various institutions and welfare activities through his musical talent. The show at the Apeksha Hospital is free of charge for the inward patients and the hospital staff.
Musical backing for the show is handled by a musical band attacheed to the Medical Supplies Division .
Dr. Sudarshana started learning music under the guidance of veteran musician Shelton Permaratne while he was a medical student at the Colombo Medical Faculty. He had the opportunity to associate with Prof. Nandadasa Kodagoda, and Prof. Carlo Fonseka, in his musical journey, as lyric writers for his songs.
Dr. Sudarshana produced his first music album in 1994 with the veteran musician Sarath Wickrama and he held his first solo live music concert titled “Ran Dedun” while he was a second year Medical student. While serving as a Medical Administrator Dr. Sudharshana produced his second musical album with 16 songs with Luxman Hilmi in 2017.
The medical practitioner has sung duets with country’s leading female vocalists like Latha Walpola, Visharadha Nanda Malani and Deepika Priyadarshanee, Shashikala Nisansala, Samitha Mudunkotuwa and ‘Kandy Lamissi’ famed Mariazel Gunathilaka in his newest album ‘Arundathee Tharakawa’.
Award winning musician Nawarthna Gamage has composed the music for about 14 songs in this album while country’s leading wordsmiths like Rathna Sri Wijesinghe, Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe and Geethenath Kudaligama have penned some meaningful lyrics.
“Selected suitable music could be used as a therapy to promote health and wellbeing of people,” says Dr. Sudarshana who has a vision to encourage the society including the health sector to utilise music as a therapy for the people to get rid of mental stress and so many other psychological complications created by the modern life style.
‘Late professor Nandadasa Kodagoda is one of my heroes, who influenced my way of thinking’ says Dr. Sudarshana while remembering Prof. Carlo Fonseka as another teacher who has guided him as a medical practitioner and a musician.
He was grateful to Dr. Lal Panapitiya, Deputy Director General of the Medical Supplies Division of Ministry of Health and the welfare society of the Medical Supplies Division, Colombo for giving the necessary support to organise the concert.
