Sandun double leads Richmond to glory
An all-round performance by Sandun Mendis paved the way for Richmond to record a comfortable 29 run win over St Peter’s in the final of the Under 19 Division One limited over tournament final played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Sandun made a top score of 42 and then ended with an impressive bowling return of 5 for 20 in his ten overs to help defending champions Richmond to retain the title for yet another year.
St Peter’s despite a stubborn knock of 52 inclusive of six boundaries and a six by Shannon Fernando who also added 47 runs for the eighth wicket with Kanishka Maduwantha was able to muster a score of only 172 runs in pursuit of 202 runs for victory.
St Peter’s in their run chase fell into deep trouble losing two wickets in the first over that of skipper Santhush Gunatilleke in the second ball and Mohamed Ameen in the fourth ball of skipper and right arm pacie Dhananjaya Lakshan.
Sulakshana Fernando and Shannon Fernando steadied the Peterite innings with the pair associating in a valuable 46 runs stand for the third wicket but they lost two wickets with the score on 47 with right arm off spinner Sandun Mendis doing the damage and St Peter’s in tatters with the score on 47 for 4 in the tenth over.
