Legendary Boney M live in Colombo
Legendary Boney M, featuring Liz Mitchell will come alive on stage in Colombo, Sri Lanka and get ready to hit the dance floor as you groove on some popular retro hits.
Boney M, featuring Liz Mitchell – the original lead vocalist accompanied by the full eight-piece live band, will be performing live in Sri Lanka on the 16th of June at SLECC starting at 7.00pm.
Boney M. was not only the disco cult band of the 70’s and 80’s but remains a living legend of the entire disco era and even in today’s hip hop era.
Boney M is a pioneering disco band created in 1975 in West Germany by well-known writer and producer Frank Farian.
Boney M. was one of the disco-orientated pop acts which dominated the European charts throughout the late seventies and early eighties with a string of hits that are remembered to this day.
All the performers involved in the project ‘Boney M’ were born outside of Germany, in the Caribbean islands, moving to Western Europe as teenagers. Liz Mitchell, the original and the only lead singer of Boney M. was born in Jamaica and moved to London at the age of eleven.
While working on the project ‘Boney M’, the band members lived in London and West Germany (Hamburg, Hanover, Frankfurt).
The quartet was phenomenally popular all over the world, except for the USA, where the team’s successes were much more modest.
The biography of Boney M’s hits is extensive. The group had eight Number One hits in the European charts with the: Daddy Cool, Sunny, Ma Baker, Belfast, Rivers of Babylon, Brown Girl in the Ring, Rasputin, Mary’s Boy Child. In addition to the Boney M’s singles was the success of three Number One albums in the European market: ‘Take the Heat off Me’, ‘Nightflight to Venus’ and ‘Love for Sale’.
Manager Farian moulded the four-piece band in the dance-pop fashion, featuring the stunning vocals of Liz Mitchell, which proved irresistible to the radio, dance floor and partygoers.
She always wanted to be a professional singer and with her mother’s belief and support she finally got luck; when working as a secretary an agent called and offered her a leading role in the musical Hair. Liz accepted and moved to Berlin where she stayed for three years. After this, she began working towards her original goal to be involved in the music business.
Whilst in London doing a recording session Liz was asked to join a new band, Boney M. This role launched her international singing career and the rest is history.
In their ten year history from 1975 to 1985 Boney M. has received numerous awards in the music industry (including the British Carl Alan Award), about two hundred gold and platinum discs, were listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for sales worldwide.
The super hit ‘Rivers of Babylon’ still occupies a leading position on the duration of the peak of the singles chart in Germany. In 2006 the group celebrated its 30th anniversary.
There was a new compilation CD ‘The Magic of Boney M’ with a new song, recorded by Farian and Liz Mitchell. The album became a bestseller in many countries of the world. In 2011, new releases of Boney M. again entered the international charts.
On August 28, 2015, the German state broadcaster DW (Deutsche Welle) in the popXport programme named the 10 most successful German music projects in the last 40 years. Boney M. again became the leaders of the rating, once again confirming its status of the best pop-export number 1.
Beney M, after 42 years of long run and there is no doubt that songs from the past are far more popular than ever before. Boney M’s international success during the past twenty-five years has proven that their hits definitely belong to the collection of timeless classics.
