Tharaka Bandara Samarakoon of St. Thomas’ College Matale was adjudged as the Best Male Athlete for his outstanding performance in the boys U-20 long jump (6.52m) while M.D. Sadali Amaya of St. Thomas’ Girls’ School Matale who returned best timing (1m 5 sec.) in the U-20 girls 400m event was named the Best Female Athlete at the Matale Education Zone Inter-School Track and Field Meet 2018 concluded at Matale last week.

St. Thomas’ College and St. Thomas’ Girls’ School won the boys and girls athletic championships respectively at this meet.

St. Thomas’ College retained the boys title with a tally of 120 points while Hindu college Matale ended close second with 104 points followed by Ajmir National School Ukuwela third with 33 points St. Thomas’ girls collected 94 points and edged out the reigning champions Sri Sangamitta Girls NS Matale, who had to be content with runners up position earning 87 points. Vijaya Matale and Nagolla Sidhartha MV were placed joint 3rd with 30 points each.

Over 800 athletes (boys and girls) representing schools in the Rattota, Ukuwela, Yatawatta and Matale educational regions participated in the five day athletic meet conducted by the Sports Education Unit of the Matale Zonal Education Office.

  •    Vijaya College became both boys and girls junior athletic champions with 23 points each
  •    Runners-up – Boys: Zahira Matale (16) – Girls: Sri Sangamitta NS Matale (15)
