A National Environment Week, from May 30-June 5, has been declared to mark World Environment Day that falls on June 5.
With the intention of ensuring a pristine environment for future generation, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) had organised a cleanup programme in the Negombo lagoon area, with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy.

Further, over 700 persons including Army and Air Force personnel, university students, officials from the Central Environmental Authority, Dept of Coast Conservation & Coastal Resource Management, Negombo Divisional Secretariat, Ministry of Fisheries, and members of Fishermen’s Union took part in this effort which resulted in the removal of large quantities of polythene, plastic and other non-degradable pollutants.

Dept of Coast Conservation & Coastal Resource Management Director General Gamini Hewage, Negombo Divisional Secretary Alawatta, MEPA Chairman Rear Admiral (Rtd) PADR Perera, and MEPA Deputy General Manager- Operations, Commander MAJ Priyantha, also attended the programme.
