New transfer scheme for National School Principals: MoE

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to introduce a new transfer scheme for Principals of National Schools (NS) effective this month, a senior MoE official said. Under this scheme, Grades I and II Principals will be transferred every 8 years instead of 10 years, and will a effect some 200 Principals of 352 NSs.

However, Principals of some NSs have launched a campaign against the scheme, claiming they were being sent to smaller NSs, an official said. But, MoE officials said it was not a demotion for the Principals in larger NSs, it was a method to utilise their services to improve other schools as well.

The official said some Principals have been serving in NSs for long periods, political influence and therefore, are reluctant to move away from where they are “We will treat all Principals alike. The decision to transfer will be made by a Committee,” the official said.

The Committee will look into the students’ qualifications, requirements to improve the standard of the school, whether they were facing any allegations and other extra-curricular activities, before implementing the transfer plan.

“Also, there may be Principals from smaller NSs who could be effective in a large NS, and needs to gain relevant experience. If the scheme is not effected, they will miss out on an opportunity,” the official added.
