Cabinet approvals for the welfare and benefit of children

A series of Cabinet approvals for the welfare and benefit of children were granted this week.
Among the decisions are:

  • Make ‘Health’ a compulsory subject for the GCE (O/L) exam, as per proposal submitted by the Committee of Experts on Educational Reforms, and to be implemented on the approval of the National Education Commission.
  • Take necessary steps to conduct Vocational Training (NVQ), encourage youth to follow such courses and provide soft loan facilities.
  • Introduce a loan scheme up to Rs. 2 million to establish Day Care Centres.
  • The aforesaid was a combined proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of National Policies & Economic affairs, and Minister of Women & Children Affairs, Chandrani Bandara.
  • “Event Management Guide to protect children from any violence, and Principles of Child Rights”, prepared by the Dept of Probation & Childcare, according to a proposal by Minister Chandrani Bandara, to execute it as National Guidelines and to implement, monitor and supervise these Guidelines through all the respective officers.
  • Providing 150ml-packets of milk price-marked @ Rs 30, and manufactured by Milco Pvt.Ltd, to students of Grades 1-5 and Special Education Units in selected schools, implemented since 2013, to be continued irrespective of increased Market price.

The proposal was put forward by Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
