Galle Face Green goes clean courtesy Asian Grammar School
View(s):Asian Grammar School (AGS), Gothatuwa New Town, Colombo, initiated a “Cleaning & Awareness Project” at Galle Face Green (GFG) last Saturday (2), to coincide with World Environment Day on June 5. The programme was conducted in keeping with the School’s 2018 theme “Beat plastic pollution” and the slogan “Moving towards a plastic-free future”.
June 2 was a rainy day. Despite the gloom and the drizzle, a determined team comprising the Principal, Chairman, Teachers, Students and their parents worked tirelessly to clean the once beautiful landscape, with the hope of bringing back its former beauty, and to lend a helping hand to those who strive to cleanse the oceans.
The participants were offered drinks by the Vendors Association of GFG. The school is known to carryout its functions in an environmentally friendly manner. Even the colour theme symbolizes the ‘eco-friendly’ policy of the school.
Lunch sheets are banned inside the school, and the students are constantly trained to conserve natural resources. To date, the school has implemented tree-planting campaigns, cleanup of the surrounding, with dustbins placed alongside the road leading to the school. Meanwhile, the Matara branch of AGS is carrying out its own “Cleaning & Awareness Project” at the ‘Jungle Beach’, Unawatuna.
The AGS Management intends to continue the “Cleaning & Awareness Project” at the ‘Nilaweli’ and ‘Panadura’ beaches as well, according to a teacher at AGS, Ms Nawamalika Kulasinghe de Silva.
