Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) last night dismissed allegations of ‘any wrongdoing’ by the Lankan team currently playing in the West Indies, saying it will “take all necessary steps to defend any player, in the event of any unwarranted allegation” brought against a member of the team.

The reaction came after Sri Lanka was implicated in an apparent ball-tampering issue on Day 2 of the 2nd Test match in St Lucia, West Indies. “The team management has informed us that Sri Lankan players have not engaged in any wrongdoing during the ongoing (2nd) Test match played between Sri Lanka and West Indies”, an SLC statement said.

The team, on Day 3 of the match, protested against an allegation by the umpires, citing “Changing the Condition of the Ball’’, the statement said. “SLC advised the team to take the field to ensure continuity of the match and wish to commend the decision taken by the team to continue with the game ‘under protest’, to ensure the spirit of the game is upheld.” The statement further said it had conveyed to the team management that SLC will take all necessary steps to defend any player, in the event any unwarranted allegation is brought against a member of the team.

“SLC reiterates its commitment to adhere to the Laws of the game and to uphold the spirit of the game. SLC stands firm in its commitment to protect the dignity of the National Cricketers at all times”, the statement said.
