Stray-dog menace at Kalubowila Hospital

Stray dogs roaming around the Colombo South Teaching Hospital (CSTH) cause enormous difficulties to staff and patients.

There are about 13 strays at the hospital

The dogs often roam around the Outpatients Department, clinics and the Accident Ward, and patients complain the animals may be spreading germs.

There are about 13 stray dogs currently at the CSTH, and Hospital Director Dr Asela Gunawardena acknowledged they are a serious problem. “While earlier officials had been allowed to put down such stray dogs, a ban on this practice has now resulted in a rise of the stray dog population,” he added.

Dr Gunawardena said he had made senior Health officials aware of the situation and was hoping for a solution.
