Division 'A' boys champions St. Thomas' Matale with their coach Palitha Wasalage

The stickers from two Matale schools St. Thomas’ College and Sirimavo Bandaranayake model school proved their dominance in schools hockey arena by winning the Division ‘A’ and ‘B’ Hockey Championships at the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Tournament 2018 for boys and girls Under-18 worked off at Rajarata University ground Mihintale in Anuradhapura.

St. Thomas’ Matale playing in Division ‘A’ beat St. Joseph Vas College Wennappuwa by 3-1 in the final to clinch the title.

Matale Thomians dominated the first half totally to gain 3 goals within a space of 10 minutes. N.M. Heendeniya scored the first goal in the 8th minute followed by P.B. Herath claiming the second goal off a penalty corner in the 10th minute and then skipper Raneesha Herath netting the third goal in the 18th minute to lead by 3-0 at short whistle.

The second session saw Joseph Vas scoring their solitary goal through Suren Harsha in the 40th minute of play.

The four-day tournament (June 12 – 15) conducted by Sri Lanka Schoo ls Hockey Association attracted 17 boys teams in Division ‘A’ and 16 in Division ‘B’ championships representing Matale, Kandy, Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Badulla, Polonnaruwa and Jaffna education regions.

Results

St. Thomas’ beat St. Sylvesters Kandy on 4 – 2 penalties while Joseph Vas out played Ananda College Colombo 1 – 0 in the respective semi finals. Ananda beat St. Sylvesters 2 – 0 in the decider for the third place M.D. Alwis and P.S.C. Silva scored a goal each for the winners.
St. Thomas Matale beat S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia 3 – 2 on penalties St. Sylvesters Kandy beat Royal College Colombo 2 – 0, Ananda beat St. Peter’s Bambalapitiya 1 – 0, Joseph Vas beat St. Aloysius Galle 4 – 3 on penalties.
