Committee set up to form new policy on teacher transfers

The Education Ministry has set up a committee to form a national policy on transfers of teachers in State-owned schools.
The three-member committee has called for recommendations from relevant trade unions and leading educationists on best practices to be implemented in the transfer of teachers in national and provincial schools.

This follows complaints from transferred teachers who have sought redress at the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission and the courts.
Although a national policy on the transfer of teachers exists, many transfers in provincial schools are being made arbitrarily, targeting and discriminating against certain teachers.

A spokesman for the MoE said that Zonal Educational Offices and Provincial Education Ministries ignored circular No.20/2007 which stipulates the basis on which transfers should be made. - (CC)
