Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has vowed to take action on complaints regarding exorbitant charges at private schools and the facilities provided.

The move follows a string of complaints that the schools were overcharging parents, particularly for grade one admission. Minister Kariyawasam said that a committee will be appointed to study the complaints and take necessary action regarding these schools. Director (Private Schools) at the Education Ministry P M Salahudeen said that among the issues they will be looking into will be whether private schools have qualified teachers.

“We want to prevent the exploitation of persons,” he said. He added that the Ministry has powers to intervene and they could make use of the school inspectorate system to check on private schools. (DW)
