‘Down Memory Lane’: Memorable evening
View(s):The 18th edition of ‘Down Memory Lane’(DML) held on Sunday 8th July turned out to be a full house event of absorbing singing for grand 150 minutes, held at Hotel Randiya, Moratuwa.
The capacity crowd of golden oldies lovers thronged enthusiastically to sing, sing and sing- and how they relished this, was a sight to behold.
The Moratuwa Arts Forum(MAF) musicians were there in great numbers to give a lead to the seemingly unending sing along sessions, which comprised a wide repertoire of cowboy and plantation songs, Dixieland favourites, calypsos, wartime hits, popular songs from the 60s to the 90s era and a package of Sinhala evergreens .
Music for the event was co-ordinated by past president Sarath Goonawardene, while many seasoned MAF musicians such as Brian Coorey, Hiran Fernando, Lincoln De Silva, Nihal Fernando among others supplemented Nalin and the Star Combination to perform as a specially formed musical outfit .
Singers of the calibre of Lankika Perera, Sureshni Wanigasuriya, Lilanthi Jayaratne, Anuradha Mendis, Shermila Fonseka, Lucille Pereira, Delvin Pereira, Erinton Perera and others helped and motivated the audience to sing. It was encouraging to note, a youthful band of MAF musicians performing on stage this year – which is encouraging news for DML in the long term.
Joint project Chairmen for the year 2018 were Laksiri Fernando and Priya Peiris – both well known musicians in their respective fields.
The event ended on a nostalgic note with the audience holding cross hands and chanting the strains of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ – depicting Great Spirit of brotherhood through music.
The programme was compered by co-Chairman Laksiri Fernando.
The principal sponsor for the event was Seylan bank PLC, while the Director /CEO of Seylan Bank. Kapila Ariyaratne and Mrs.Ariyaratne were chief guests for the occasion .
