President to inaugurate filling of Kalu Ganga reservoir tomorrow
View(s):President Maithripala Sirisena will tomorrow inaugurate the filling of Kalu Ganga reservoir tomorrow. This reservoir was built parallel to the Moragahakanda reservoir under the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Multi-Purpose Development Project. The canal taking water from the Kalu Ganga reservoir to Moragahakanda reservoir will also be inaugurated.
A granite Buddha statue built opposite the Moragahakanda reservoir will also be unveiled, while the Moragahakanda reservoir will be renamed ‘Kulasinghe reservoir,’ in memory of one of the country’s most celebrated engineers, the late Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe.
Built at a cost of US$ 1.2 billion, the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Multi-Purpose Development will provide irrigation facilities to 81,422 hectares in the country’s dry zone.
It will also supply potable and industrial water supply to Anuradhapura and Trincomalee towns and generate hydroelectricity while opening up 5000 hectares of new land for agriculture in the Northern, North Central, Eastern and North Western provinces.
