Crackdown on ragging at Universities
View(s):All Universities have been instructed by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) to get strict with those involved in ragging by launching an operation to crack down on those involved in ragging. Higher Education Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa told Education Times, under the plan, each University will have a separate unit headed by a Marshal operating round the clock, so that complaints could be received and acted upon immediately, and those involved in ragging handed over to the police.
He said the move comes after University authorities received at least 300 complaints of ragging since last year. He said that, in the past, sufficient action has not been taken against those involved in ragging, and therefore, the Police has been requested to provide assistance to act swiftly on such complaints. He said that, in some of the universities the students have virtually taken control of the administration, and action is being taken to avoid such situations.
He said action will be filed on offenders under the Anti-ragging Act where bail cannot be obtained and, if found guilty, a jail term of 10 years imposed and expelled from the university. He said students who lodge complaints are assured of full security. - Damith Wickremasekara
