Familians queens for 11th successive year
Holy Family Convent Kurunegala emerged Milo Schools Netball queens for the 11th successive year when they bagged the overall title at the 27th Milo All-Island Schools Netball Championship concluded at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
The Rock City girls secured the overall championship in style after qualifying to two finals — the Under-15 and Under-19 which they won with ease which was both against Kalutara BV and apart from that they came out on top in the Under-13 age group even though points are not added for the championship title. Museaus bagged the Under-17 title.
The 11-time champion ended way ahead in the points table by securing 70 points against second placed Musaeus, who got 40 followed by Kalutara BV, who ended with 30 points.
The Familians was first crowned the netball queens in the year 2008 when it was held in their hometown Kurunegala and then retained it in 2009 at Anuradhapura and followed it up clinching the title in (Matale) 2010, (Matara) 2011, (Polonnaruwa (2012), (Piliyandala) 2013, (Beliatta) 2014, (Matale) 2015, (Matara) 2016 and in Badulla last year.
Apart from emerging overall champions for the 11th year they had the honour of bagging three of the four most outstanding players awards namely Akithma Linduli Abeysinghe (Under-13), Disni Tania Kumari (Under-15), Methma Dayaratne (Under-19) while Randuli Rupasinghe was adjudged the best in the Under-17 age group.
Meanwhile in the Division ‘B’ category saw Buvanakabahu MB Kandy emerged champions in the Under-15 category, Holy Family Convent Kadawata the Under-17 champions and Bandarawela MV the Under-19 champions.
