Contemporary Sri Lankan watercolour art is what viewers can look forward to at the ‘Beyond the Water Margin-Season 2’ exhibition. The exhibition sees the return of well known artists Gunasiri Kolombage, Basil Cooray, Sanjeewee Senevirathna and Nilusha Weerakkody, this time sharing the limelight with newcomers Lalith Ranjan, Asanka Wijerathna and Sandatharaka Abeysinghe.

Seven artists with 7 different styles

Gunasiri Kolombage with his years of experience as an artist, designer and graphic designer has been the driving force who has worked as a watercolour artist for years.

Basil Cooray, a master in simplifying human figures in a minimalistic way uses watercolour to depict sentimental expressions going beyond illustrations.

Sanjeewee Senevirathna’s paintings are an expression of a cultural space fine-tuned by dramatic shadows.

Nilusha Weerakkody’s works present a cross section of contemporary society by removing the common ‘human figure’ from his art, focusing instead on the ‘material world’, which is a result of human activity.

Lalith Ranjan features the moods of mysterious, active and dramatic nights lit by thousands of artificial sources displaying the unrestful rest of ‘urban spaces’.

Asanka Wijerathna takes the challenge of giving life to portraits of hardworking villagers as well as painting the aesthetic beauty of graceful dancers.

Sandatharaka Abeysinghe nourished by folklore, emphasizes the authenticity of rural culture which is almost going extinct in the face of urbanization.

Season 2 of ‘Beyond the Water Margin’ returns on August 17 at the Lionel Wendt gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public from August 18 to the 20 from 9 a.m to 8 p m.
