A/L Candidates ignorant of revised timetable, appeal to HRC for redress

A group of 12 Advanced Level (A/L) students unable to sit for their exams, due to last minute changes in the Timetable (TT) by the Examinations Dept (ED), have appealed for redress, to the Human Rights Commission.

It has transpired that the ED had changed the TT for Buddhism, Sinhala and Tamil from morning to evening, without informing the students of the change.
It transpires that the ED had published the A/L TT scheduled for August 2018, on May 16, 2018.

However, on June 25, 2018, a revised TT had been uploaded with Buddhism, Sinhala and Tamil switched from morning to evening.
These students who downloaded the TT earlier had stuck to the original TT, and not visited the site again. Subsequently, when these students arrived at the examination centre for their exams, they were told the subject paper had been already conducted.

These students are from Horana Sri Palee MV, Wavita Maithri MV and Walagama Saddhatiss MV. The Horana Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) spokesman said the students have complained to the Education Ministry through the Horana PS. “There are students sitting for the 3rd time, and have lost their chance to enter university,” he said.

Meanwhile, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the students have been wronged by the negligence of the ED in not informing of the change.
He said that the ED should have informed of the change, at least, by highlighting the change in the revised TT sent with the Admission forms. - CC
