Ranjani Jayasuriya won a Silver Medal at 1962 Jakarta Asian Games
View(s):I read with interest the list of Asian Games Medal Winners in the article by Susil Premalal appearing on Page 24 of the Sunday Times (Sports Section) of August 12, 2018. I wish to point out a mistake in this list.
Your columnist says that Ranjani Jayasuriya won a Bronze Medal in Tennis at the 1962 Jakarta Games. In fact, she won a Silver Medal in 1962, and should be included in the Silver Medal winners’ list. Ranjani Jayasuriya won the Silver Medal in the Ladies Doubles event, partnering Yuen Yuen Tsui of Hong Kong. Attached is a copy of the relevant page from the SLTA 75th Anniversary Souvenir. Of course this can be easily confirmed by checking with the Asian Games archives.
Ranjani Jayasuriya is a Past Pupil of Visakha Vidyalaya, and we Visakhians are proud of the fact that she is the first woman athlete from Sri Lanka to win a medal at the Asian Games. And that was a Silver Medal.
It would be appreciated if you would kindly correct this mistake.
