Sri Lanka to ban high-energy electrical appliances
View(s):Sri Lanka will ban the import and sale of electrical appliances consuming excessive energy with the aim of reducing household power consumption, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) J.D.K. Wickramaratne said.
The Authority will promote the sale of energy efficient electrical appliances while creating awareness on the government’s move towards energy conservation among the people, he revealed.
High–watts electric fans will be banned as an initial step of this programme of curbing household power consumption, he said revealing that a gazette notification for this purpose will be issued shortly.
The Authority will also be pulling the plug on high power consuming air conditioners, electric kettles, computers, refrigerators washing machines, and cooking appliances, he added.
The SEA has already introduced a special labeling scheme for electric fans, air conditioners washing machines, refrigerators and cooking appliances etc and it will help the consumers and government authorities identify electrical appliances which meet the required energy efficiency standards for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka Customs will be informed of these labels to identify energy efficient electrical appliances, he said emphasising that a team of energy experts is entrusted with the task of testing those products before placing them in this category.
