A day in Candyland
Candyland is a very exciting place. It has a chocolate castle. There are lolly trees. In the corner where the marshmallow flowers are, a chocolate river flows with chewing-gum boats. The roof is filled with coco icing and there is a jelly road to enter the castle.
Inside there are pictures made with candy and a throne made out of lollies, candy, chewing-gum, chocolate and icing. There is even a cat made with chewing-gum.
Last but not least there is a sign. It says,
“Eat anything.” So I ate. It was so delicious!
I went back home happily.
It was an enjoyable day. I loved it so much.

Tapestry 2018 – A show we can all learn from

My sister, Sirinie was to take part in the much heralded concert Tapestry 2018 which was organised by her school Methodist College, Colombo 3. It was held on July 26 and 27, 2018. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

The first item, a Sinhala language drama revolved around an ant trying to adjust to life with a family of grasshoppers. My favourite character from that item was the tough-as-nails bee, that the ant and grasshopper have a run-in with. The next, a Tamil drama showed us the value of playing outside and maintaining relationships with your friends. Both plays were acted with great zest and vigour.

The third play, Aladdin was acted in English. I really liked the actress who played the feisty princess Jasmine and the Genie became an instant hit. The final item –
a perahera – was the one Sirinie acted in and she performed her Kalagedi dance beautifully. My mum and I were really proud of her.
The actors, singers and dancers were all younger than most of us in the audience. But we could all learn a thing or two from them if we wanted to become performers ourselves.

What my friends mean to me

My friends mean everything to me. My friends always stand by me and I do too. They encourage, trust and believe in me. They encourage me to do the impossible. They cheer me up when I am sad. They help me to face the challenges in life. They make me feel happy when I’m lonely. They always know how to put a smile on my face. We have all heard of the saying, ‘Best friends are our second sisters’. I do the same when they need help.
I don’t know everything about friendship but what I’m sure is that friendship doesn’t come like lightning and thunder. It takes time to trust and believe in someone step by step.

My favourite place
My favourite place to go to is the beach. The beach is a nice place. There is soft sand and water in the beach.
We can swim in the water and make sandcastles on the sand. I bought a beach set to take to the beach with me.
When it is good weather, the sea is calm. But when there is bad weather the sea is rough.
It is safe to go to the beach only when it’s calm. When it is calm I like to bathe in the sea as well as make sandcastles. I like my favourite place very much.

An important event
May 11, 2018 was a very important day for our school. We had an all-night pirith ceremony in our school. It was to bless all the children and to bless the new main hall which was opened on that day.
All the prefects came to school at five o’clock. The boys were dressed in the national costume and the girls were in lama saree. I was decorating the shrine room. All my friends came at six o’clock and dinner was provided by the school. At 8.30 p.m., all the children and their parents came to the main hall.
At 10 o’clock the ceremony started.
The chief guest Mr. J. B. Disanayake and our Managing Director Mr. Lakshman Kuruppu participated in the event
along with our principal and two
vice-principals. When the priests came to the hall, the tom-tom beaters beat their drums and the 20 priests went into the ‘Pirith Mandapaya’. The Managing Director offered betel to the priests and invited them to chant pirith. The event was recorded by channel ITN. .
After the ‘Maha Piritha’, most
of the guests and children went home. Some of the priests also left. Then only four priests were chanting pirith.
At midnight, the prefects served
short-eats and Nescafe.
My brother and I came home at 5.30 in the morning. It was a very happy day for us.

Dwarf planets
Our Solar System is a huge galaxy which has no end found yet. It has been formed 4600 billion years ago. The Solar System has the Sun, eight main planets, asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, dust and gases. The small planets which have no fixed orbits are known as dwarf planets. Five planets have been identified as dwarf planets by the International Astronomical Association in 2006. However, some astronomers believe that there may be more than five. The five dwarf planets are Pluto, Eris, Ceres, Make Make and Haumea.

Pluto was discovered in 1930. It takes 247.9 earth years to orbit round the Sun. Pluto has five moons. They are Charon, Nix, Styx, Hydra and Kerbercus. Eris was discovered in 2005. A day on Eris takes 25.9 hours. It takes 561.4 years to orbit the Sun. Eris has one moon called Dysnomia. Ceres was classified as a dwarf planet in 2006. This is the closest dwarf planet to the earth. It takes 4.6 earth years to complete a year. Ceres has no known moons.

Make Make was discovered in 2005.
It takes more than 305 years to complete a circle of the sun. it orbits 45.3 times the earth’s distance. It has no known moons.
Haumea was discovered in 2003. Haumea rotates very rapidly and has the shortest day among the dwarf planets. It takes only 3.9 hours to complete a day. Haumea has two moons.

Water as a natural resource
There are many gifts of nature. Water is also a gift of nature. But it is a limited resource. Water is essential for every living thing. We can survive without food for three or four days. But we cannot survive without water for even one day.
More than 85% of the earth is covered with water. But more than 90% of water is not directly consumable. Only 1% of water is directly consumable. Most of the people use water in a careless manner. Water is used for leisure,
for agriculture, for transportation, for cooling the body, for photosynthesis etc.
Therefore we must use water in a careful manner. So let’s save water.

The Rainbow
The rainbow appears after the rain. It has many beautiful colours. Everyone says that it has seven colours.
I have a dream to catch it.
But I have to travel to catch it.
It suddenly comes without knowing. And it disappears without knowing. I feel bad when it disappears. But I know it will come again. Until it comes again, I am waiting.
