A Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) member representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has called for an inquiry into a marble Buddha statue gone missing at the Mayor’s office. However, Mayor Rosy Senanayake denies there was a Buddha statue in her room, and the statue outside her room, still remains intact.

SLPP Member Shermila Gonawela said a marble Buddha statue at the Colombo Mayor’s office has gone missing since cleaning and preparing for the Mayor to take office. She said the statue at the entrance to the CMC building was not the statue that has gone missing, claiming the Mayor was misleading the media, saying the statue has not gone missing.

“The statue was on a shelf on top of the door, inside the Mayor’s room, leading to the Committee room” , she said. Ms Gonawela said she will take up the issue at the next CMC meeting. However, Ms Senanayake denied the SLPP claims, saying that false claims were being made to tarnish her name and sabotage her good work. She said that from the day she entered her room, she did not see any statue inside.

“On the day that I took office, the media was there, along with distinguished guests and the Buddhist clergy, and they too would have noticed there was no statue,” she said. Ms Senanayake said she held a press conference in front of the Buddha statue at the CMC, and explained that the statue did not go missing.
