Danish pump manufacturer Grundfos will be joining hands with Sri Lankan authorities to bring innovative water technologies alive in the country following its restructuring of regional operations as part of a strategy to drive growth across the Asia Pacific, company officials said.

“Asia Pacific operations will now come under four geographical clusters including East Asia, South Asia, Oceania, and Indochina providing a stronger focus on local requirements,” the company announced.

The aim is to develop new solutions as regards water treatment, water quality monitoring and new digital solutions, as well as to ensure even better use of efficient pump technologies for the countries in the region.

Supplying world-class pumps in Sri Lanka for 25 years, Grundfos is today focused on commercial building services, water utility, and supporting industry with leading pump and water solutions, Regional Managing Director of Asia Pacific Region, Kim Jensen told the Business Times in an e-mail communiqué recently.

Grundfos’ biggest projects are supplying pump solutions for Shangri-La Colombo under its commercial building services arm, upgrading works for Lion Brewery as part of industry, as well as supporting the construction of a water treatment plant for the Vavuniya General Hospital, the second largest hospital in the Northern Province.

From an industry perspective, a key sector the company is focused on is the beer industry, where they provide various water transfers and booster pumps required in their production process, as well as for the gloves production industry, he disclosed.

Grundfos’ Sri Lankan partners, Analytical Instrument and Hayleys provide after-sales services to the industry and commercial building services sectors, respectively.

Sri Lanka has also recently been hit by the worst drought in 40 years, he said adding that technology could play a significant role in mitigating droughts, in the form of data gathering to determine drought intensities, data-based analytics to detect and prevent water loss through pipe leaks, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient water supply.

To help drought-stricken cities tackle periods of water scarcity, Grundfos has supplied solutions that are able to utilise abundant solar energy to power water supply, such as the SQFlex submersible pumping system.

The pump system offers the perfect water supply solution in remote areas where water is scarce and the power supply is non-existent or unreliable, he said.

Outside of flood management, Grundfos supplied to water treatment plants in the Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

The Danish company is optimistic about Sri Lanka’s ongoing mega mixed-development projects, including the Colombo Port City, Regional Business Director-water utility in Asia Pacific Region Tan Chee Meng said pointing out that the company is in talks with customers for other upcoming projects.

Grundfos has stepped in to address the issue of water leakage with forward-looking water utility solutions such as the Demand Driven Distribution system which uses an intelligent software that automatically adjusts water flow through the use of remote sensors at the end user points of use, he revealed.
