A tense situation arose when villagers attempted to prevent a fiscal officer appointed by court from evicting the occupants of a dwelling illegally constructed within the Arachchikattuwa – Manaveriya cemetery.

The Divisional Secretary had filed action in the Magistrates Court for the demolition of the building and eviction of W. Neville -a casual worker by occupation- and his family.

Goods and other household items in the dwelling were placed by the roadside

The Magistrate issued his order for the demolition of the building and eviction of its occupants as far back as in 2013. But the occupant had prayed for time to move out of the dwelling.

As time had elapsed and the occupant showed no sign of leaving, a team from Court arrived to demolish the construction, a few weeks ago, only to be confronted by villagers who attempted to prevent the fiscal from performing his duty.

However with the help of police present on the occassion the fiscal moved several items from the dwelling which were placed by the roadside.

The house was then demolished.

Villagers who gathered helped cover the belongings of the occupant
