Bakery products will go up in price, after the flour price was increased by five rupees a kilo from yesterday. Bakers met yesterday night to determine the new prices of bread and other bakery products and will have another meeting tomorrow.
All Ceylon Bakery Owners Association President N.K Jayawardena said that besides the flour price, the prices of eggs and margarine had also gone up. He also said that prices of potatoes, onions, canned fish other ingredients used for pastries had also gone up because of the depreciation of the rupee.
The bakery association chief said they had increased the prices of pastry products by Rs 5 and buns by Rs 1 on August 17 following the fuel price increase. However, he said they had not increased the price of bread. Mr. Jayawardena said they might have to increase the price of a loaf of bread by Rs. 10 if they were not offered concessions on industrial gas.
