Join “LC Route 66” to raise funds for Performing Arts Centre
View(s):Throughout its history, students of Ladies’ College have excelled in the performing arts. The school’s choirs, band, orchestras, eastern and western dance and dramatic arts programmes are just a few of the diverse cultural activities offered to the students. In order to allow these programmes to continue to flourish, the school plans to build a Performing Arts Complex housing a soundproof music room, storage room for musical instruments and teaching facilities for the performing arts subjects.
The school is partnering with the Parent Teacher Association of Ladies’ College (LC PTA) and the Old Girls’ Association of Ladies’ College (LC OGA) to hold a fundraising drive in the form of a walk, “LC Route 66”, and carnival in the school grounds on Saturday, September 8. The Walk will commence at 2 p.m. from the school and will culminate at the carnival.
“LC Route 66” is a particularly apt name for the Walk for a number of reasons, the most obvious being that the street address of Ladies’ College is No. 66, Sir Ernest De Silva Mawatha, Colombo 7. Secondly, “Route 66” also lends its name to the rhythm and blues standard made famous by Nat King Cole, as well as to a musical, and so has a strong connection with the performing arts, which, given the objectives of this particular walk and carnival, is especially fitting. Most importantly, just as Route 66 in the USA (one of the original highways within the US Highway System and one of the most famous roads in the USA), is embedded in the nation’s psyche as the “Main Street of America” or the “Mother Road”, so is the road to Ladies’ College – LC’s own “Route 66” – an integral route in the lives of the members of the LC community.
Preparations are in full swing to ensure that the walk and carnival are among the best in the school’s history. The LC “Route 66” T-Shirt which will serve as a ticket to participate in the walk and tickets to the carnival can be purchased from the school.
LC “Route 66” T-Shirts/Caps/Umbrellas and Carnival tickets are available till September 8 at the Ladies’ College New Hall Foyer on all school days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Carnival tickets are also available from the LC OGA secretariat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
