China’s Huang bags her second title
Second seeded Jiaqi Huang of China in the girls singles of the ITF Junior Circuit Week 1 tennis who clinched the singles title bagged her second title of the championship by winning the girls’ doubles partnered by compatriot Yijia Jiao played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.
The top seeded Chinese pair was made to work hard for their success by the third seeded Indian pair comprising of Archita Mahawal and Akshaya Suruesh as they underwent some anxious moments before prevailing by two sets to one in the three set finale. Huang two days ago clinched the girls’ singles title defeating India’s Sanjana Sirimalla.
Meanwhile Jasza Szajrych of Poland emerged champion of the boys’ singles event when he recorded a convincing 2-0 win against Aryaan Bhatia of India who became their third player who had to play second fiddle while the pair of Matthew Garcia (Philippines/Tanapayy Nirundorn (Thailand) bagged the doubles title by overcoming Subasj Paramasiva, (India)/Arjun Sriram (USA) by 2-0 to emerge champion.
None of the Sri Lanka players in both the boys’ and girls’ categories were able to advance beyond the second round. Kavisha Ratnayake was soundly beaten in the second round encounter of the boys’ singles by India’s V.M. Sandeep while Dhilvan Herath and Shivendra Herath was defeated in the boys doubles quarter finals.
In the girls’ category Anika Seneviratne who won her maiden women’s national title a fortnight ago bowed out of contention in the first round while two players Anjalika Kurera the losing finalist of the women’s nationals and Natasha Munaweera was defeated in the second round.
The ITF Junior Circuit Week 2 is scheduled to get underway on September 10 and is due to end on September 16.
